One of the highlights of our visit to Taiwan was spending time at the Taipei Public Library in Beitou District. It was another surreal moment for me, as I used to only see it in photos—and now I can say that I’ve seen it in person and can attest to its beautiful architecture. Nestled in the heart of Beitou Park, this stunning eco-friendly library is often praised as one of the greenest buildings in Taiwan—and stepping inside, it’s easy to see why it’s so beloved by locals and travelers alike.

We spent about an hour there, wandering through its warm wooden interiors, browsing the shelves, and simply soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. But what struck me the most wasn’t just the beautiful architecture or the impressive collection—it was the way the locals used the space. I love how so many people choose to spend hours inside the library, reading books, catching up on newspapers and magazines, or quietly working on their own hobbies. We saw people tucked away in cozy corners, completely absorbed in sketching, painting, or writing, surrounded by that soft hush that only a good library holds.

Another thing that amazed me was how thoughtfully the library is designed to welcome everyone. There are so many seats and tables scattered across the floors—big communal tables for group study, single desks for quiet reading, and even comfortable armchairs by the windows. There’s enough space to accommodate plenty of visitors without ever feeling crowded. It’s clear that this library isn’t just a place to borrow books—it’s a true community space where people come to spend their day, pursue their interests, and find a moment of calm.

Taipei Public Library reminded me that libraries are so much more than buildings filled with books—they’re sanctuaries, creative havens, and quiet witnesses to the small, beautiful moments that happen when people are given the time and space to simply be. I left with my heart full, hoping we see more spaces like this grow in our own communities too.
