Another month, another wrap-up! Let me start off with a reading update: I’ve been on a book buying ban since April 22 and so far, it’s going well. I did purchase two books because I felt like rewarding myself for getting past something that I went through this month, but that’s it. It helped that I left all the “pasabuy” book chats that I joined last year and also that I am determined to make a huge dent on my physical tbr first. Also, at the end of 2022, I’ve ordered books from overseas which takes quite some time before it reaches my country, so that also helps me ban myself from ordering/purchasing more.
Anyway, in the month of May, I was able to stick to the tbr that I’ve set with just the exception of one book. I am also happy that I picked up quite a number of great reads this month — most of the titles that I’ve read are 4-star books for me! I’ve also been reading more recently ever since I discovered simultaneously reading the physical book and listening to the audiobook. It helped me focus more on my current read, especially when my surroundings are a bit noisy.
The first book that I’ve read in May is Spare. This was actually a DNF which I’ve mentioned in my review. I DNF-ed it at 30% because I just couldn’t connect with this memoir. To me, it sounded like he was just complaining for something that’s already a given.
The next book that I read was The Kurim Case by Ryan Green. This was a non-fiction and also quite disturbing given the things that have happened in the story. I rated it 4 stars!
The third book that I read was Two By Two by Nicholas Sparks! It’s my first Nicholas Sparks in years and this book just reminded me of the reason why this author is one of my all-time favorites. I rated it 5 stars!
The fourth book that I read was The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren which was another 5-star read for me! This is my first Christina Lauren and it definitely won’t be my last. I forgot how much I loved reading romcom novels ever since I started leaning towards thrillers and this was such a delight of a comeback.
Another book that I was able to get through this month was The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson. This has been on my tbr for the longest time! I loved the movies and documentaries that surround this story, so I’m glad that I finally read the book. I gave it 4 stars too!
The next book that I read is another memoir which is You’re That Bitch by Bretman Rock. I really enjoyed the audiobook of this as it made my reading experience even better. This book was funny, yet full of lessons. I gave it 4 stars.
The seventh book that I read this month was Never Lie by Freida McFadden. I’ve been feeling a bit FOMO the past months because everyone’s talking about this author in the thriller book world, so I’m glad that I finally jumped into the bandwagon. And my oh my did I enjoy this! It was fast-paced and an edge-of-your-seat kind of read. I gave it 5 stars!
The next book that I read was Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing by Matthew Perry. It’s another memoir read that I enjoyed. Again, the audiobook made my reading experience better. I listened to this during out trip to Puerto Galera and back home. My heat broke for Matthew Perry as I listened to everything he went through. 4 stars!
The third to the last book that I finished this month was The Mother-in-Law by Sally Hepworth. This is another first for me, and the rumors are true, Sally Hepworth is the Aussie version of Freida McFadden. I wasn’t expecting the twist at the end! 4 stars!
Another book that I read was The Boy From the Woods by Harlan Coben. Again, another first for me. I’ve been meaning to read Coben’s works since last year, and I’m glad that I already did. This was fast-paced, action-packed, and very intriguing. I really enjoyed Wilde’s POVs. 4 stars!
The last book that I read in the month of May was The Things He Heard by Matt Shaw. This is a short novella that tackles about mental illness. It’s disturbing, but very unputdownable. Trigger waning on self harm and violence. 3.5 stars.
I’ve read quite a lot of books this month and I’m glad that most of them are great reads! June will be a busy month for me given that it’s my brother’s and my husband’s birthday + we will be going on another trip, but hopefully I can still squeeze in some of my planned reads.
How about you? What’s your favorite read this month?
