A host of the sharpest young adult authors come together in this collection of terrifying tales and psychological thrillers. Each author draws from a mix of literature, film, television, and music to create something new and fresh and unsettling. Clever readers will love teasing out the references and can satisfy their curiosity at the end of each tale, where the inspiration is revealed. There are no superficial scares here; these are stories that will make you think even as they keep you on the edge of your seat. From blood horror, to the supernatural, to unsettling, all-too-possible realism, this collection has something for anyone looking for an absolute thrill.
Personal Thoughts:
Rating:
This will probably be one of the shortest reviews that I write, but here it goes anyway:
After so many years of reading this book and putting it back down, I have finally finished reading it last year as a Halloween book. Honestly, there were some stories in the book that don’t seem like it fit the genre, but most of them are still pretty good. I really enjoyed reading it and some of it even creeped me out!
What I liked most about these stories are that there are foot notes at the end of each story where they reference another book or movie that inspired the authors to write the stories. This book was quite a mixed bag, but I still recommend it to anyone who’s into reading short stories or if you want to get into a horror or thriller mood. Kind of perfect for October as well.
I’m not going to review each and every story, but I would like to commend some of my favorites:
- The Birds of Azalea Street by Nova Ren Suma
- In the Forest Dark and Deep by Carrie Ryan
- Sleepless by Jay Kristoff
- The Girl Without a Face by Marie Lu
