Synopsis:

It’s been eighteen months since the Raxter School for Girls was put under quarantine. Since the Tox hit and pulled Hetty’s life out from under her.

It started slow. First the teachers died one by one. Then it began to infect the students, turning their bodies strange and foreign. Now, cut off from the rest of the world and left to fend for themselves on their island home, the girls don’t dare wander outside the school’s fence, where the Tox has made the woods wild and dangerous. They wait for the cure they were promised as the Tox seeps into everything.

But when Byatt goes missing, Hetty will do anything to find her, even if it means breaking quarantine and braving the horrors that lie beyond the fence. And when she does, Hetty learns that there’s more to their story, to their life at Raxter, than she could have ever thought true.

Personal Thoughts:

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

“I think I’d been looking for it all my life, a storm in my body to match the one in my head.”

Wilder Girls has been on my TBR since it came out last year. The cover and the premise seemed so interesting that I just had to read it. We follow three girls — Byatt, Hetty, and Reese — in a story set on Raxter Island where these girls are studying at an all-girls boarding school. The book picked up two years after the school was put into quarantine due to an infection called the Tox took over the whole island. The Tox is contagious and causes body mutations and death. For the girls and their teachers to survive, the CDC and Navy rationed food and other necessities every week in the past two and a half years which honestly isn’t even enough to feed all of them. They were also promised a cure.

This book was off to a very slow start and I honestly felt like it was such a drag during the first few chapters, but it picked up pace when I got past the 100-page mark and it was worth it. At that point, I just couldn’t put it down and was so eager to find out what the hell was going on.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book and I recommend it to everyone who just recently started reading sci-fi thrillers as it’s not that complicated to understand and the writing style is very easy to follow.

Trigger Warning: Graphic violence, body mutation, gore, death of people, death of animals, starvation, suicidal.
