Why Siquijor Will Always Have My Heart

Siquijor is known as the Mystic Island of the Philippines due to the infamous urban legend about black magic and witchcraft. But did you know it is also called the Healing Island of the Philippines? Long before the legend began, Siquijor was known for its herbal medicines and traditional healers. Locals say that the legends of kulam and barang are misconceptions—stemming from the older generation’s belief that herbal healers used black magic to cure their patients. Since the urban legend gained popularity, the island became even more renowned for its mystical appeal. As a result, voodoo dolls and potions were introduced as souvenirs—a unique and cute idea, if you ask me! ♡

Siquijor is also known as the Island of Fire or Isla del Fuego, a name given by the Spaniards during their explorations as they observed that at night, the island emanated an eerie glow due to the swarms of fireflies that lived in the island’s molave trees.

Having experienced Siquijor firsthand, I can confidently attest that it is exceptional in so many ways. The locals are incredibly kind, friendly, and accommodating. The food is a bit on the pricier side, but a lot of them are so worth it. And don’t even get me started on the island’s mesmerizing beauty with its numerous waterfalls, caves, and cliffs—I could talk about it for hours! It’s so enthralling and breathtaking that it has truly found a special place in my heart.

Siquijor is one of those places I know I will always long for and want to visit again and again. I’m over the moon that we chose this place to celebrate our third anniversary. Honestly, I’ve been dreaming about it since we got back—have I been mysticized? Probably so, by its captivating beauty.
